Veterans Recreation Center Opens

Opening announcementWe have been thinking about it, talking about it, and  challenging ourselves to make it possible.  Well, it is now going to happen.

A date is set for a  Grand Opening on Thursday, Feb 26th, 2014, at noon.

Several personal computers will be available for drop-in local veterans to use or for members to attend Legion Institute on-line.  Our post is equipped with WiFi throughout the building, so you can use your own phone or tablet.

There is a poker table and a piano for the talented.  There is also a budding post library (we have a member wife who is a librarian!) with military-oriented books and magazines.

We’ll have coffee, maybe a cold six-pack, light snacks, and our own veterans’ cave to enjoy them in.

Sling TVWe’ll use DishTV’s new Sling TV with ESPN and ESPN2, News, El-Rey, AMC, HGTV, CNN, and local news.

Our first event will be a  poker game with refreshments and sports television.  Come on by and hangout with fellow vets.  Don’t worry, it is challenge poker with bragging rights only.  No cash is lost by players.

SLING TV2Post Officers will be on hand each Thursday afternoon to talk to members, veterans, and other guests.  This provides an opportunity for the members to learn more about the American Legion and what makes a post work.

Why did we pick Thursday’s?  It seems to be a day when most post members can break away.  In fact, members can come by in the morning to work with other post members as they repair, dress up and clean the post home and grounds.

What is the next step?  We’ll add better desks for the center’s three computers and printers.  We are also looking for comfortable chairs and other decorations.  There is a need for one or two 35-60″ televisions.  Do you have an extra to donate to the post?  We have one, but  need one for the bar area in the center of the post and the second will go to the recreation center for local television viewing.  See Vice Commander Medred for details.

Look for more exciting things coming right here to your  post.  We are planning a spring sunset gathering with food, a barbecue for members and  family, and a  few more events to get more veterans to come on home and visit their post  family.
