Soon to be Gone – Honoring our Heroes
Soon To Be Gone, by Captain Stephen R. Ellison, M.D., is an inspiring and thought provoking look at our nations World War II veterans through the eyes of Doctor Ellison.
He works in two level one trauma centers in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Ellison wrote that he felt that he sometimes got jaded by the endless number of trauma cases passing through the hospital doors, but that changed after he heard a line in a scene in Saving Private Ryan. He wrote, “I was touched most by the scene of the elderly survivor at the graveside, asking his wife if he’d been a good man. I realized that I had seen these same men and women coming through my Emergency Dept. and had not realized what magnificent sacrifices they had made. The things they did for me and everyone else that has lived on this planet since the end of that conflict are priceless.” He realized that many of the older patients before him were similar men who had served in combat.
