Hillsborough Christmas Event – Dec 7th

Set your calendars for December 7th for a Salute to Hillsborough Veterans from Revolutionary War to Vietnam War.  If you served, then this means you!

Christmas decorationThe Marine Corps League and the Military Order of the Purple Heart have asked for our assistance.  They need some assistance from local Orange County veterans to participate in the Holiday in Hillsborough Tour.  They need to know know ASAP!

 Here are the details on the salute and holiday tour.  (Veterans participation times are from 12 Noon to 6 PM.  Volunteers can work the full six hours or whatever amount of time you can. Veterans are needed at two locations: Museum and the Old Court House.)

The event is Sunday, December 7, noon to 6 pm – 28th Annual Hillsborough Holiday Homecomings Tour.  The 2014 Event is a Salute to Hillsborough Veterans from Revolutionary War to Vietnam War. 

 The Hillsborough Holiday Homecomings Tour has a different name and focus this year and will highlight Hillsborough during past war times, while saluting area veterans. With this year’s tour falling on Pearl Harbor Day, the theme will feature visits to private homes decorated for the holidays and other public sites representing the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars I and II,  Korean War, and Vietnam War.

The self-guided tour takes place December 7, from Noon – 6 pm and begins at the Hillsborough Visitors Center at 150 East King Street and includes a variety of beautiful homes in Hillsborough. There will be period living history moments and skits performed on the half hour throughout the day by the Orange Community Players, holiday and war era music and caroling around town. Churches are also participating. Also see historical exhibits as well as period cars at some of the tour stops.

 Musical entertainment highlights include the Triangle Tuba Quartet, High School Chorus, Handbell Choir, flutists, hammered dulcimer and more.

 In honor and remembrance of veterans, people will be able to salute veterans by writing their names on a “Veterans Wall” at the Old Orange County Courthouse. Veterans will be in attendance as well.

New this year is a Civil War Cemetery tour at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. Also at the 2014 Hillsborough Holiday Homecomings Tour, attendees can ride a 20-25 passenger train while hearing about Hillsborough’s history. The train will make stops at various locations throughout the day. Tour Tickets are $20 day of, $15 in advance; children 10 and under free. Tickets are non-refundable. The train ride is free with your ticket or $5 without. A percentage of the tour’s net proceeds will benefit a veteran’s charity.
