D-Day Observance – June 18th
D-DAY ANNIVERSARY OBSERVED – World War II veteran Mark Sumner of Chapel Hill will be honored at a special ceremony marking the June 6, 1944 Anniversary of the
allied invasion of Normandy. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Legion of Honor Medal, France’s highest military honor awarded for his valor and bravery while serving in France. Mr. Mark R. Sumner is also Director Emeritus, Institute of Outdoor Drama, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Sumner will be introduced by Lee Heavlin, American Legion Post 6 Commander.
Major Everett “Bud” Hampton, USMC (Retired), an Iwo Jima survivor, will also participate and represent our Pacific Conflict veterans.
Actual footage of the D-Day invasion will be shown. The ceremony will get under way at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. (919) 968-2070. Free and open to the public. A drawing will be held and prizes awarded to those in attendance.
The event is open to all American Legionnaires.
