VA Veterans Visit Post 6 for Fishing Outing
Local veterans from the Raleigh and Garner area visited the post today to fish, learn how to fish and prepare lines, and to just have fun with other veterans. Thanks to Project Healing Waters, the veterans were greeted by members of the Triangle Fly Fishers for a morning of fishing.
Durham VA Medical center joined in for the morning event and brought a number of ambulatory patients from the hospital. It was a great day for an outing.
The veterans got to share in our local secret, a great pond well stocked and hidden from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was a day in the country.
The VA’s Rehabilitation Therapy team brought along hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, salad, pasta, fruit and big smiles and friendliness. They prepared the food and took care of the veterans. We counted about 30 participants, of which about 20 were vets.
A number of the vets were from the Vietnam War. Their local post hosts, Lee Heavlin and Ed Gill, were also Vietnam Vets. Ed Gill took top honors by catching six fish; one bass and five bluegill. Some caught less. Some snagged their lines. Some got a nibble. All, however, just smiled and had a good time.
A special thanks to Tim Ross for stocking the pond and working with Project Healing Waters and Triangle Fly Fishers to make this event possible.
